About Ideal Weight Calculation
What is Ideal Weight?
The concept of ideal weight refers to a weight range that is associated with optimal health and longevity based on factors like height, gender, and frame size. There are several formulas used to estimate ideal weight, each with different assumptions and purposes.
Calculation Methods
BMI Method
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal weight. This calculator uses your target BMI (default 22) to calculate an ideal weight.
Devine Formula
Men: 50 kg + 2.3 kg for each inch over 5 feet
Women: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg for each inch over 5 feet
Robinson Formula
Men: 52 kg + 1.9 kg for each inch over 5 feet
Women: 49 kg + 1.7 kg for each inch over 5 feet
Miller Formula
Men: 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg for each inch over 5 feet
Women: 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg for each inch over 5 feet
Hamwi Formula
Men: 48 kg + 2.7 kg for each inch over 5 feet
Women: 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg for each inch over 5 feet
Limitations
Ideal weight calculations have several limitations:
They don't account for muscle mass versus fat mass
They may not be appropriate for athletes or elderly individuals
Ethnic variations are not considered
Health can vary significantly within "normal" weight ranges
Important Note
This calculator provides estimates based on general formulas and should not replace professional medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider for personalized recommendations about your ideal weight and health goals.
